Instagram re-encodes everything you post — and what that does, and does not, do for your privacy.
What happens when you post
Instagram processes every uploaded image to its own dimensions and compression settings. The result served to other users is a new file, and EXIF from your original — including GPS coordinates, device model and timestamps — is generally not carried into it.
Because the platform is image-first and has no 'send as file' path in the main posting flow, this is more consistent than on services that also handle documents.
What you are still disclosing
Metadata is only one channel. Instagram's own features often reveal more than EXIF would: a location tag you add yourself, the posting time, the account itself, and the content of the image.
Direct messages are worth separate thought, since files shared there may follow different handling from feed posts, and the behaviour of any given surface can change with app versions.
The case for cleaning first
Cleaning locally makes your exposure independent of Instagram's processing. It also covers the cases where the same file goes elsewhere — cross-posted to another network, sent to a collaborator, or archived in a shared drive — where no re-encoding happens at all.
For creators, there is a second reason: exported files often carry editing history, software versions and internal captions in XMP, which is business information rather than privacy information, and which nobody intends to publish.

Can people see my location from an Instagram photo?
Not from the served file's metadata, since it is re-encoded. They can see a location you tagged, and they may recognise the place from the picture itself.
Does Instagram strip metadata from direct messages too?
Images sent through the app are generally processed, but handling differs by surface and app version. Cleaning before sending removes the uncertainty.
Does posting to Instagram reduce my photo's quality?
