What AI tools embed, and where
Different generators leave different traces, in different parts of the file. Knowing which applies to your image tells you what to look for in the analysis table.
- Automatic1111, Forge and InvokeAI write a 'parameters' tEXt chunk into PNG files containing the full prompt, negative prompt, steps, sampler, CFG scale, seed, size and model hash
- ComfyUI writes the entire node workflow as JSON into PNG text chunks — often the largest single block in the file
- Adobe Firefly and recent Photoshop versions attach C2PA content credentials, a signed provenance record, in a JUMBF block
- Some pipelines add a 'digital source type' field in XMP that names the content as AI-generated
- Ordinary EXIF Software tags may still name the tool that exported the file
Why creators remove it
The prompt is the work. For many people producing images commercially, the prompt, seed and model are the part they would not publish any more than a photographer would publish their raw files and presets — and a PNG posted straight from a generator publishes all of it to anyone who opens the file.
There is also a straightforward privacy angle: prompts often contain client names, project codenames, personal details or earlier drafts of an idea. That is not information anyone intends to attach to a published image.
What this tool cannot do, stated plainly
This removes metadata. It does not make an image undetectable as AI-generated, and any tool promising that is overselling.
Invisible watermarks such as Google's SynthID are encoded into the pixel values, not stored as metadata, so no metadata remover touches them. Classifiers that analyse the picture itself are likewise unaffected. And platforms apply their own labels using their own signals, which change without notice.

Where does Stable Diffusion store the prompt?
In a PNG text chunk, usually with the keyword 'parameters'. It holds the prompt, negative prompt, sampler, steps, CFG scale, seed and model hash as plain text, readable by anyone who opens the file with a metadata viewer.
What are C2PA content credentials?
A cryptographically signed provenance record, promoted by the Content Authenticity Initiative, describing how a file was created and edited. Adobe Firefly and recent Photoshop versions attach one. It is metadata, so it can be removed — though the signature exists precisely so that removal is detectable as an absence.
Will removing AI metadata stop a platform labelling my image?
It removes one signal some platforms read. It does not remove pixel watermarks or defeat visual classifiers, and platform behaviour changes frequently, so no tool can promise a particular outcome.
Does saving a generated PNG as JPEG remove the prompt?
It removes the PNG text chunks, since JPEG has no equivalent, but it re-compresses the image and the export may add its own metadata. Removing the chunks directly keeps the image lossless.
Does removing AI metadata change the image?
No. The markers are metadata, so removal is lossless — the generated image is not re-compressed.
Will my prompt still be recoverable from the file?
Not from the cleaned copy. It is present in your original, and in any copy you shared before cleaning.
Do all AI generators embed metadata?
No. Stable Diffusion interfaces embed the most; hosted services such as Midjourney and DALL·E typically deliver files with little or nothing embedded.
Does this help with platform AI labels?
It removes one signal some platforms read. It does not remove pixel watermarks or affect visual classifiers, so no outcome can be promised.
